Outside of its native region in the Andes, coca is most widely known as the raw material for cocaine production. Long before it was used to make cocaine, however, coca played an important role in the social and religious systems of people in the Andes. It continues to fulfill cultural functions today and has even become a prominent symbol of indigenous politics in Bolivia.
