Ettal Cloister is a Benedictine monastery located in the village of Ettal in the Ammergau Alps of southern Germany. The monastery, founded in 1330 by Holy Roman Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian, is populated by 50-60 Benedictine monks who, in addition to their religious duties, operate a boarding school, hotel, book bindery, cheese factory, and brewery. The Ettal Brewery produces six varieties of beer and five specialty liqueurs. The Cloister is a popular tourist attraction, and guided tours can be arranged of the brewing facility as well as the cheese making factory.
