The adjective Flemish can be used in a few ways:

  • (linguistics) one of a number of dialects of Dutch spoken in modern Belgium and the northwestern corner of France. It is often subdivided into East Flemish, West Flemish and French Flemish.
  • (politics, geography) A person or thing from or relating to the Belgian provinces of East and West Flanders. In Belgian administration it is used more broadly to refer to the whole of Flanders, i.e. the entire Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, including Brussels which is a mixed Dutch- and French-speaking region. It can also be used to refer to the Dutch region of Zeeland Flanders or (rarely) the French area of French Flanders.
  • (history) A person or thing from or relating to the former County of Flanders.
