Although most people think of fruit as edible items in one of the four basic human food groups, fruit are properly defined as the parts of a plant containing its seeds, usually held in or around a pulpy covering. Some are edible, some inedible, and others are poisonous.
Fruit come in a variety of types, textures, shapes and sizes, so they are not always easily identified as such. Pods, seed cases, beans, samaras, berries, hips and nuts are some of the terms commonly used for different types of fruit.
