The Greater Tokyo Area (GTA) is a densely-populated Japanese metropolitan region consisting of Tokyo and the surrounding area, in the larger area of Kanto on Honshu island. It has several definitions and therefore names in Japanese; one is 'One Metropolis, Three Prefectures' (一都三県 Itto Sanken) - i.e. Tokyo plus the prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama. This is the world's most populated region,[1] with 34,634,000 inhabitants recorded in 2006[2] - over a quarter of the country's population. The approximate area is 5,200mi² (13,500 km²).[3]
