In health care delivery, health literacy is the "degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions."[1]

Markers of possible impaired health literacy are self-report of:[2]

  • Difficulty completing medical forms
  • Difficulty reading written hospital material
  • Use of someone to help you read written materials received from the hospital

It is unclear how to overcome difficulties in communicating quantitative information.[3]
