Humboldt County is a coastal county in northern California. It is bounded on the north by Del Norte County, on the east by Siskiyou and Trinity Countys and on the south by Mendocino County while the Pacific Ocean is its western border. It encompasses 2.3 million acres, 80 percent of which is forestlands, protected redwoods and recreation areas. ^[1] It is about 200 miles north of San Francisco and about 110 miles south of the northern California border. It boasts extensive parks including stands of redwood trees more than a thousand years old. Eureka is its county seat and the largest city. The name came from Baron Alexander von Humboldt (September 14, 1769-May 6, 1859) who was a Prussian naturalist and explorer.
