Founded in 1947 by the United States Department of Defense, the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a non-profit corporation that administers three federally funded research and development centers to assist the United States Government in addressing important national security issues, particularly those requiring scientific and technical expertise.

IDA only works for the government. To avoid institutional pressures to support Service positions, IDA does not work directly for the military departments, but it does projects for government organizations including the Office of Science and Technology Policy and National Aeronautics and Space Administration. One of its major centers supportes the National Security Agency. It does no work for private industry.
