Jalal Talabani, of the Kurdish people, is President of Iraq and head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). While he has been a rival of Massoud Barzani, head of the Kurdish Democratic Party, they cooperate now with Barzani heading the Kurdistan Regional Government, and with the national government of Prime Minister of Iraq Nouri al-Maliki.

He became a member of the Iraqi Governing Council.
