Lazio

From Citizendium - Reading time: 1 min

Lazio (Latin: Latium) is a region of Italy, located in the central-western portion of the Italian peninsula. Its capital and by far largest city is Rome (Italian and Latin: Roma), which is also the capital of the Province of Rome, the largest of the five provinces which make up Lazio; the others are Viterbo, Rieti, Latina, and Frosinone (all named after their capital city).

Lazio is the only Italian region to border on six other regions, namely (from south to north in clockwise order) Campania, Molise, Abruzzo, Marche and Tuscany. The western border of the region is a coastline of the Thyrrenian sea. Lazio also contains the sovereign state of Vatican City, an enclave within the city of Rome.

Today, Lazio has almost 5.5 million inhabitants (about 9% of the national population), with 2.7 of these (about 55% of the regional population) reside within the borders of the comune of Rome.[1] The current President of the Lazio Region is Piero Marrazzo.
