Ludwig I King of Bavaria

From Citizendium - Reading time: 1 min

Ludwig I (25 Aug 1786, Strassburg, France - 29 Feb 1868 Nice, France) was the second King of Bavaria. He was the son of Maximillian I Joseph, and father of King Maximillian II of Bavaria, and Otto, King of the Greeks. Ludwig was married to Princess Therese of Saxony, and their wedding reception is still celebrated today as the Munich Oktoberfest. Ludwig I abdicated his throne in 1848 due to the Lola Montez scandal. Ludwig was appreciative of feminine beauty, and had a gallery of 36 paintings of beautiful women from all aspects of Bavarian society. The beauty gallery is currently displayed to the public at the family summer residence at Nymphenburg Palace, located 6 km from the Munich city center.
