In Roman mythology, Mars is commonly described as the Roman god of war, the equivalent of the Greek God Ares, but in Roman religion he was also an agricultural guardian.^[1] The name of the month of March comes from this deity, as does the French mardi (Tuesday). The word "martial" derives from the common usage.

In Gustav Holst's suite "the Planets", Mars is characterised as the bringer of war.
