Politics[edit]

Their Executive Director at the time, Tiong Choon, made a speech in 2019 stating that the People's Republic of China officials had requested Media Chinese International to "telling China's stories well", and the Beijing government (Chinese Communist Party) leaders had visited Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia for engagements and talks with Media Chinese International. Tiong Choon also claimed that the Winter Olympics are "in the hands" of the Western countries and they "integrate political agenda".[2][3][4]

Controversy[edit]

Censorship[edit]

Based on reports, some caution and self-censorship seem to surround China-related news coverage in Malaysia, occurring most prominently among Chinese-language media. Six Chinese-language media journalists contacted for this study declined to be interviewed. According to a former journalist, local Chinese media used to be “freer” before Media Chinese International (MCIL) started buying up these outlets in 2008. Journalists have indicated that Chinese embassy officials in Malaysia may exert influence by directly communicating with media management, sometimes threatening to withdraw advertising if coverage is deemed unfavorable to Beijing.[5]

Executive compensation[edit]

In 2024, Media Chinese International's three-year loss to shareholders was 31% while its EPS was down 112% over the past three years. The total annual compensation for CEO at the time, Francis Tiong, worth USD $445K and intensified scrutiny.[6]
