Monocytes are cells that are born in bone marrow, briefly circulate in blood as leukocytes, and then become bound to tissue as macrophages. In the leukocyte form, they are large, contain a large, oval or somewhat indented nucleus surrounded by voluminous cytoplasm and numerous organelles. Once circulating, they carry out specialized types of phagocytosis.
