Nagasaki prefecture (長崎県 Nagasaki-ken) is an area of Japan located on the island of Kyushu. Its population was 1,466,000 in 2006.[1]
Nagasaki prefecture shares its name with its own capital city, Nagasaki (長崎市 Nagasaki-shi). This was the entry point for foreign traders during Japan's period of self-imposed isolation; there are several areas associated with foreign communities remaining in the city, such as Glover Garden. Outside Japan, however, Nagasaki is better known for the 1945 atomic bomb in which over 70,000 people were killed.[2]
