The Philadelphia Phillies are a Major League Baseball team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The team was founded in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers in the National League. [1] [2] [3]

Championships[edit]

The team has had a total of 2 championship-winning seasons in the modern era (1901 and later) of major-league baseball, winning the World Series in 1980 and 2008. They were also National League champions, but lost in the World Series, 6 times, in 1915, 1950, 1983, 1993, 2009, and 2022. [4]

Prior to the start of the modern World Series in 1903, the team did not win any National League titles.

Locations and Nicknames[edit]

The team has been based in Philadelphia since its inception in 1883. They have played their home games at the following stadiums. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

  • 1883-1886: Recreation Park
  • 1887-1938: Baker Bowl (a.k.a. National League Park, Huntingdon Street Grounds, Philadelphia Park, Philadelphia Base Ball Grounds, the Baker Bowl)
  • 1894, 6 games: Old Athletic Field at the University of Pennsylvania (after fire damage at the main ballpark)
  • 1903, 16 games: Columbia Park (after balcony collapse at the Baker Bowl)
  • 1938-1970: Connie Mack Stadium (originally Shibe Park, renamed Connie Mack Stadium in 1953)
  • 1971-2003: Veterans Stadium
  • 2004-present: Citizens Bank Park
