The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball team based in San Francisco, California. The team was founded in 1883 as the New York Gothams in the National League. Later, the team moved from New York to San Francisco before the start of the 1958 season. [1] [2] [3]
The team has had a total of 8 championship-winning seasons since the beginning of major-league baseball's modern World Series in 1903, winning the World Series in the following years. [4]
They were also National League champions, but lost in the World Series, 12 times, in the following years.
Note: The Giants also won the National League pennant in 1904, but refused to participate in what would have been the 2nd year of the modern World Series. [5]
Prior to the start of the modern World Series, the team won 2 National League titles, in 1888 and 1889. In both years, they won a 19th-century version of the World Series, playing against the champion from the American Association (a baseball major league active during the period 1882-1891). [6] [7]
Since the team's inception in 1883, they have been based in two different cities: New York, NY (1883-1957) and San Francisco, California (1958-present). They have played their home games at the following stadiums. [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14]
They were nicknamed the Gothams for their first two years, 1883-1884. They have been the Giants from 1885 onward. [15]
The following uniform numbers are retired in that players, managers, and coaches of the team will no longer use them. For non-players, the person's role in the organization is also listed. [16] [17]
