Traditional stoves were a device designed to burn some kind of fuel in order to produce heat. Stoves were often, but not always, designed to cook food, in addition to heating the room where they were located.

After the industrial revolution, stoves that relied on electrical energy, began to be employed, that were not designed to provide home heating.

Occasional use is made of stoves that use mirrors, and rely on solar power, to cook food.

The related term furnace typically refers to devices designed for industrial purposes, or as part of a system to deliver heat to multiple rooms.
