This article is about Texas Rangers (baseball). For other uses of the term Texas, please see Texas (disambiguation).

The Texas Rangers are a Major League Baseball team based in the Dallas, Texas metropolitan area. The team was founded in 1961 as the Washington Senators, an expansion team in the American League. Later, the team moved from Washington, D.C. to Arlington, Texas before the start of the 1972 season, when they became the Rangers.

They are not to be confused with the Washington Senators franchise that was an original AL team, later relocated to Minnesota and renamed as the Twins.[1] [2] [3]

Championships[edit]

The team has had one championship-winning season, winning the World Series in 2023. They were American League champions, but lost in the World Series, two times, in 2010 and 2011. [4] [5]

Locations and Nicknames[edit]

Since the team's inception in 1961, they have been based in two different cities or metropolitan areas: Washington, D.C. (1961-1971) and Dallas, Texas (1972-present). They have played their home games at the following stadiums. [6] [7] [8]

  • 1961 only (Washington): Griffith Stadium
  • 1962-1971 (Washington): RFK Stadium (originally D.C. Stadium, renamed RFK Stadium in 1969)
  • 1972-1993 (Arlington, TX): Arlington Stadium
  • 1994-2019 (Arlington): Globe Life Park in Arlington (originally The Ballpark in Arlington, renamed Ameriquest Field in Arlington in 2004, Rangers Ballpark in Arlington in 2007, and Globe Life Park in Arlington in 2014)[9]
  • 2020-present (Arlington): Globe Life Field

They have been known by two nicknames: [10]

  • 1961-1971: Washington Senators
  • 1972-present: Texas Rangers

Retired Numbers[edit]

The following uniform numbers are retired in that players, managers, and coaches of the team will no longer use them. For non-players, the person's role in the organization is also listed. [11] [12]

  • 7 Ivan Rodriguez
  • 10 Michael Young
  • 26 Johnny Oates (manager)
  • 29 Adrian Beltre
  • 34 Nolan Ryan
  • 42 Jackie Robinson (retired across major league baseball)
