In the Midterm Elections of 1934, the Democratic Party gained nine House seats and nine Senate seats from the Republican Party, increasing their already overwhelming majorities. Although the economy had failed to recover from the Great Depression, Democrats had a series of legislative success and Franklin Roosevelt remained popular. 1934 was the first off-year elections in which a first-term president's party gained seats in both houses of Congress.
