Aeolus or Aiolus was a minor god, called the "Custodian of the Four Winds" in Greek mythology.

He lived on the Lipara islands, where the winds were trapped in the caves and it was his job, as ordered by the higher gods, to release these winds as breezes or gales, as directed. In the Odyssey, he presents Odysseus with a bag containing all the adverse winds, allowing him to reach Ithaca with favourable winds. However, Odysseus fell asleep within sight of his homeland and his men, overcome by curiosity, opened the bag. The resulting winds which were released blew them far off course again.^[1]
