Alexander III (1249-1286) ruled during Scotland's 'Golden Age'; during this time Scottish trade flourished, and merchants from mainland Europe flocked to trade in Scotland. Alexander III helped trade even further by maintaining the peace treaty with England (the Treaty of York, which was signed by Alexander II in 1237). He also defeated the Norwegians in a series of battles in the far north of Scotland.

Death[edit]

Alexander died in a riding accident in which he and his horse fell of a cliff and into the North Sea.^[1]
