Alice in Chains is a popular and influential rock band that formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987. Unlike other grunge bands they owed more to its classic rock and heavy metal roots. They spawned hit singles such as "Rooster" and "No Excuses". Lead singer Layne Staley died in 2002 of a heroin overdose.[1]

Their studio album Black Gives Way To Blue was distributed in 2009. The album reached the top ten of the Billboard 200, achieved gold certification and was given two Grammy nominations. Elton John performed the piano on the title track.[1]
