Nick DeJ American History Homework Ten

1. I think I could have prepared myself better by studying for the test more then one week. I think I should brush up on the presidents and what they accomplished or did not accomplish.

Good point about the limitations of only one week, and about the presidents.

2. I missed two questions about presidents. I like to read about presidents. I even have a book about all of the presidents up through George W. Bush.

Excellent.

3. In 1925, the Tennessee General Assembly passed a bill proposed by Representative John W. Butler of Macon County, which made it illegal to teach evolution in public schools. Governor Austin Peay signed the law, the Butler Act, mainly because he though the Butler Act was a protest against irreligious tendencies in America and highly doubted that it would be enforced. However shortly after, John Scopes was on trial for teaching evolution. Peay did not foresee that the ACLU would view the Butler Act as unconstitutional and use Scopes as a “test case”.

Interesting, but I wonder whether the governor really doubted it would be enforced. Perhaps he did doubt it, or perhaps that was something he told the liberal media to try to get it off his back.

4. In 1915 the Germans started sinking ships regardless of type. They sank the Lusitania, a British ship, which had many American passengers. They sank the Sussex, an unarmed steamer. The Germans then vowed to stop sinking ships, but in 1917, started again. In 1917, the German foreign minister sent a telegram to Mexico trying to get the Mexicans to invade the United States. U.S Intelligence intercepted this note. The Americans and President Wilson were very angry. We had no choice but to get into the war.

Excellent.

5. I believe Teddy Roosevelt was a good president. Even though he was a Republican, he was not really conservative. He was not really liberal either. He had strong opinions and acted on them. For example, many liberals believe we should not get involved with other countries and their political problems, but he thought we should get involved whenever there was any wrong doing taking place. Another example is that environmental concerns are generally on the liberal agenda, but Roosevelt was a conservationist. He started the national park system.

Superb!

6. Amendment 17 was ratified in 1913. It gave the right to elect senators to the people of each state. This replaced Article I, Section 3, Clause 1 of the Constitution, which gave the power to state legislatures to elect senators. This Amendment was proposed to promote democracy and to cut down on corruption. I think it definitely promotes democracy, but I don’t think it necessarily cuts down on corruption.

Terrific, will use as a model answer!

7. This cartoon shows Theodore C. Roosevelt as an angel trying to make peace between Russia and Japan and end the Russo - Japanese War.

Right. You might also mention the date: 1905.
