1. How could you have prepared better for the midterm exam, and which part of American history do you think you could improve most for next time? I think I could have prepared better by first, studying more (obviously), and taken more time to place different happenings (i.e. acts, compromises, wars, etc.) under the Presidents. And the parts of American history that I can improve for the final are probably, the acts of Congress, relative timelines, and finally, the positions of different parties (which brings me to the next question).

Superb analysis.

2. Which is your favorite question on the midterm exam that you missed, and what do you like about the question or subject matter? Question 15 of the boys’ exam. I was surprised that I had missed that one by such a wide margin, because I actually knew the answer, but I wrote down the wrong one anyway. Since then, I’ve let it go, but when I was reviewing my answer, I noticed that I circled the “III” (which was the wrong answer anyway), not realizing that I was to fill in the multiple choice under it. But now I look at it and laugh at myself.

Terrific answer, and good point about "letting it go." We can all improve by reducing careless errors (which we all have), but it's also important not to let the errors bother us too much.

3. Comment on any aspect of the Scopes Trial or the issues leading up to it, and/or can you compare it to any other influential trial in American history? I like the Scopes Trial because the two were so disagreeable with each other, and that Mr. Bryan spoke so relaxed and fluently (at least that’s the way he came across to me).

Good, but note that the disagreement is sparked by the evolutionists, who often engage in namecalling and other confrontational tactics.

4. Do you think the United States should have entered World War I, and why? I believe we should have entered the war because the Japanese provoked our forces over in Pearl Harbor, and when you do that, you’re screaming “I want war.” But we also entered it for the wrong reason: just to help England fight off their own problem.

Good, except Pearl Harbor sparked WWII, not WWI. (Minus 1).

5. Your view of Teddy Roosevelt, please. I like him because he had a nice set of standards that he stuck to (he was a tenacious man), and he always had his mind set on something.

Excellent.

6. Pick one of the Constitutional Amendments 16 through 19, and express your understanding and view of it. The 18th amendment struck me as a good one to write about being that it tried to help fix the ties between families due to alcohol consumption (even though it was only in effect for a relatively short period). By banning alcohol, you create an environment where everyone wants to “stock up” on alcoholic products. And that doesn’t necessarily help, seeing your parents buying boxes of beer and such, in a rush to “have enough” for the coming prohibition.

Superb insight about stockpiling.

7. Explain the cartoon. This cartoon was probably written around 1900-1910, because that was around when the Russo-Japanese war was going on. The cartoon depicts Theodore Roosevelt gripping what appears to be the Tsar of Russia’s, and the Japanese Emperor’s ears, in an effort to bring them to peace.

Good.
Almost perfect! Score: 69/70. Well done!--Aschlafly 12:18, 24 November 2008 (EST)
