American History Homework Ten 11/19/08 Olivia F.

1. I believe that I could have prepared better for the midterm exam by studying the terms more. I think I need to improve my knowledge of the mid-1800s.

Good analysis.

2. My favorite question on the midterm exam that I missed was Question 26 on the Girls’ Exam because the answer was pretty obvious. The speaker was burning down a building and shouting, “FREE SOIL”, which hints that he is against slavery; therefore, the only issue with the cartoon is the time period.

Right. Good follow-up analysis of the cartoon.

3. The Scopes Trial was most like the Roe v. Wade Trial in 1973.

Interesting. Other students said that also, but you might explain why. (Minus 1)

4. I agree with the United States entering World War I because we were telling the world that we were not going to sit around and let innocent American citizens die without a fight (i.e.- the sinking of the Lusitania).

Excellent! Will use as a model!!

5. Teddy Roosevelt did some amazing things such as, winning the Nobel Prize, and creating a treaty with Panama (the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty); however, no one is perfect, and Teddy did make some mistakes. To me, the Simplified Spelling Board was ridiculous.

Terrific answer. I agree about the spelling!

6. The Nineteenth Amendment: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on the account of sex.” I absolutely agree with this amendment; the United States was settled by men AND women, therefore, women should also have a vote as to who should govern the United States.

Right.

7. This cartoon, probably drawn in 1905, depicts Roosevelt grabbing the ears of (or scolding) Russia and Japan. Roosevelt had invited Russian delegates and Japanese delegates to New Hampshire to sign the Treaty of Portsmouth to make peace over the Russo- Japanese War.

Excellent.

H2. The limitations on free speech during World War I were not the best idea, but were necessary. The American citizens needed to submit to the authority of their government, as long as it didn’t go against their moral belief.

OK, given the national emergency.

H3. I believe that the Prohibition was desirable and that alcohol should only have been allowed for medical personnel or businesses. It should not have been used for consumption.

Superb.

H4. The midterm was challenging, which I very much enjoyed. The questions covered the periods very well. Overall, I know that history is not my strong suit but I enjoyed taking the exam.

Your attitude is terrific!
Excellent paper! 99/100. Congratulations!
