American History

Homework Assignment 10

1. For better preparation for the midterm exam, I could have read through the model answers more, and have gone over the lectures. The part of American History that I could improve most on for next time is all of the written documents.

Excellent.

2. My favorite question on the midterm, that I missed, is #4: A student was overheard saying the following: “The Puritans, like the Quakers, believed in religious freedom for all.” What should the teacher say to the student? I like the question because the answer is just one that seems like an odd answer.

Good, interesting observation.

3. I like how the two lawyers cross-examined each other.

OK.

4. I think the United States did the right thing in entering World War I. We had been attacked. We had to teach the Germans a good lesson.

Right.

5. Teddy Roosevelt had a great foreign policy, “speak softly and carry a big stick.” I do not support his action to breaking up the big monopolies. Instead of breaking them up, he should have given money to new businesses so they could compete.

Interesting approach, but I doubt you really want the government to give taxpayer money to new businesses, many of which would fail and waste the money.

6. The 16th amendment: The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several states, and without regard to any census of enumeration. Congress was wrong to make this amendment. It just gives the government more power.

Excellent, will use as a model.

7. In the cartoon Franklin Roosevelt is grabbing Russia and Japan by the ears. Roosevelt invited Japan and Russia to a meeting to end the war between them. They created the Treaty of Portsmouth.

Nope, it's Teddy Roosevelt. Otherwise good. (Minus 1).

8. H2 If the limitations of free speech during a war are absolutely necessary for the well fare of a country, than I could agree with what the government did during World War I. If the government just did it because they did not want to here the peoples complaints, then I am totally against it. I am totally against what the government did during World War I. They basically did not want to here the complaints.

Good analysis.

9. H3 Government should not be able to interfere with free enterprise by establishing maximum working hours for men. If a man wants to work every hour of his life, then he should have the right to do that. As long as the business that the man is working for allows him to work that long, than there should be nothing wrong with it. The government has no right to interfere.

Excellent!

10. H4 Some of the questions of the midterm exam were challenging. Others needed careful reading. The “which article did this quote come from” questions were not easy at all. I was disappointed because the midterm did not cover any of the wars. About 5 wars were fought, and nothing was on the test about them. I learned that I need to prepare myself better for the final exam. I do not know every answer just from reading the lectures once.

Excellent point about the wars, but there was the question about the treaty that ended the Mexican War (unfortunately, I had a mistake in it!).
Superb work. 99/100. Well done!--Aschlafly 15:54, 23 November 2008 (EST)
