American History Homework Ten-SarahW

1. The way I prepared was memorizing the key terms, but I think what I should’ve done was try to understand history, instead of just memorize it. I wish I could’ve reread the lectures, and read the model answers, because that probably would’ve helped me a lot. I could improve on my understanding of each president. Not just their term dates, but what their policies were and what happened in their presidency.

Good analysis.

2. My favorite question from the midterm that I got wrong was the first political cartoon, about the barnburners. I liked it because I think that political cartoons can be a fun, but somewhat frustrating, challenge.

That is a funny cartoon!!! I agree completely.

3. The most interesting thing, I think, about the Scopes Trial, is that the defendant, John Scopes, was a substitute biology teacher. While taking biology, I wondered how anyone who had taken a biology class could EVER believe that everything was a coincidence, and there is no intelligent designer. The world we live in is so incredibly complex, and everything works together perfectly, that it has to be impossible for this all to be an accident. It’s very interesting then, that one of the most important trials about evolutionism vs. Creationism was because of a biology teacher!

Terrific insight! Might use as a model answer.

4. I do think that, because of the intercepted telegram from Germany to Mexico, it was necessary for us to enter the war. We needed to defend ourselves, before someone ended up attacking us. Germany was a big bully, and I think we needed to help the rest of the world stop them.

Right about that!

5. I think that Teddy Roosevelt was a great president who brought about many great changes to America. His accomplishments include his dedication to stop big business’ from monopolizing, negotiating the end to the Russo-Japanese War, and the Panama Canal. I really like his establishment of the national park system, because we need to keep our nation’s natural resources safe.

Good.

6. The 19th amendment to the constitution gave women suffrage rights. This was an important turning point in how women were viewed in society. Giving us the right to vote puts on a more equal plane with men than we were before. Needless to say, I am a fan of the 19th amendment.

Right.

7. The cartoon is about Teddy Roosevelt (in the middle) being the mediator/negotiator between Russia (left) and Japan (right) during the Russo-Japanese War. In 1905, President Teddy Roosevelt invited Japan and Russia to New Hampshire to help make peace between the two. The result was the signing of the Treaty of Portsmouth, in June 1905. The cartoon itself has some interesting tidbits, like Teddy Roosevelt having wings, and the fact that he’s holding Russia and Japan by their ears. I’m not sure what these aspects mean though.

Correct again! The wings are to make him "angelic" and saintly. Holding by the ears is something an adult might to do a disobedient child.

H2. Our country was founded on the concept of freedom. In America, we have many freedoms that we take for granted. During World War I, the Supreme Court tried to limit our freedom of speech, which is completely backwards from what our founding fathers set out to do. I don’t understand how it could have happened, either, because it is blatantly unconstitutional.

Right.

H3. Debate: Was Prohibition desirable? Has alcohol caused more harm than good? Alcohol is a drug. It is addicting and dangerous. It can be fatal to both the drinker and the people around him. I don’t think it has any good, and people would be smart to stay away from it. Anything that makes you “forget your troubles” is definitely not a good thing.

Superb answer. Will use as a model!

H5. I disagree with the Lochner doctrine, because I think the government should help protect us against bullying corporations. This is also what unions do, but I think that a national law helps too.

Good.
Terrific answers. Perfect, in fact! 100/100. Congratulations!--Aschlafly 17:52, 22 November 2008 (EST)
