Basil (ocimum basilicum) is an herb which is commonly found in Italian foods, namely as an addition to pasta, topping on pizzas or as an added flavor to lasagna. Basil is also served in salads, and also in soups. It is a prime ingredient in pesto.

Health benefits[edit]

Basil contains numerous vitamins and minerals which promote human health. These include Vitamin A, Vitamin K, manganese, iron, folate, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, and a small amount of Vitamin C. It offers antioxidant properties, to reduce inflammation. It is often considered to help with managing stress, slowing aging, reducing arthritis issues, and more.[1][2]
