Brasov is a city in the Transylvania region of central Romania, with a population of 285,000 (as of 2002) (Metropolitan area population: 400,000). It had a substantial German population in the Middle Ages and after, and was also known as Kronstadt. Between 1950 and 1960, it was named Orasul Stalin. Brasov contains a well preserved medieval citadel or walled town, which is one of Transylvania's major tourist attractions.
