Buchan is a district of north-east Aberdeenshire, washed by the North Sea on its north and east coasts. It is a primarily agricultural region, with fishing from its coasts; the two main towns, Fraserburgh and Peterhead are among Scotland's pre-eminent fishing ports. Buchan is a flat and low-lying area, open to searingly cold winds. the highest point, Mormond Hill, is topped by an array of broadcasting masts. Buchan also boasts the most easterly point in Scotland, Buchan Ness, south of Peterhead. A dialect form of Scots known as Doric is widely spoken in the region.
