Calais is a town in Northern France, in the Department of Pas-de-Calais, and is the main port for ferry services to southern England, principally serving the ports of Dover and Folkestone in Kent.

During the Middle Ages large parts of France were held by the English. Calais was the last part of France to be lost by the English crown, in 1558. The English queen at the time, Mary I (Mary Tudor), is said to have lamented "When I die you will find the word Calais engraved on my heart".
