Career politician is a term to describe elected officials that spend a lifetime in politics.

In America, career politicians are destroying the political system. The Founding fathers intended to have elected officials serve the people and then return to civilian life. Instead, career politicians game the system to hold onto power. Special interests and lobbyists wield enormous financial influence, this gives an incumbent politician an unfair advantage over any new challengers.

Term limits is the answer to this problem and works well for the presidency and governorships. The power hungry, entrenched, establishment types will never knowingly limit their own careers. It's common to have elected officials spend twenty, thirty or more years in office. When they do retire or are defeated, they take private industry positions as special interest lobbyists that influence government. This further erodes government serving the citizens, all for personal financial gain.
