Champagne with salmon (Champers mit Lachsfisch in German) was a popular dish in Germany up until the end of World War I. Due to the subsequent poverty and hyper-inflation, it became unpopular among ordinary Germans due to its expense and the view that only the wealthy could enjoy it. When Adolf Hitler came to power, one of his claims was that he would make Germany so prosperous that everyone would be able to afford champagne with salmon. This promise was never fulfilled, however, and it is only in recent years that there has been a resurgence in the dish.
