The Chandra X-ray Observatory[1] is one of NASA's Great Observatories. It is an X-ray telescope designed to perform astronomy from low Earth orbit. It was launched on July 23, 1999. The project was known as Advanced X-Ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) until its launch, when it was renamed in honor of the astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar.
