Cormorant refers to birds of the order Suliformes, family Phalacrocoracidae, comprising three genera and 42 species of coastal aquatic, fish-eating birds.

Etymology[edit]

The word "cormorant" has its origins with the Old French word cormareng, a combination of corp ("raven"), and marenc ("of the sea" or "sailor", from the Latin marinus), ostensibly meaning "water crow", based on its resemblance to crows and ravens, as well as its habits. This word in turn evolved into the Middle French cormorant by the thirteenth century[1][2].
