Credit for inventions often goes to "the last link in the chain",^[1] but rarely has anyone invented anything all by himself. As Isaac Newton said, "If I have seen further … it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." [2] Newton said this to justify stealing credit for the inverse square law of gravity. It had been previously discovered by Hooke and others, and Newton was making fun of Hooke's short stature.
