David McCullough (born July 7, 1933) is a historical biographer known for works such as Truman (1992), John Adams (2001), and 1776 (2005).^[1] The book Truman was adapted into a TV film in 1995, where H.S. Truman is played by Gary Sinise, and the book^[2] was adapted into a television miniseries in 2008, where Adams is played by Paul Giamatti. McCullough has also appeared on the PBS television programs "American Heritage" and "Smithsonian World". There is also a documentary about McCullough titled David McCullough: Painting With Words (2008).^[3]

He was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and attended Yale University.^[4] He wrote for Sports Illustrated, then moved to Washington D.C. and worked for the United States Information agency.^[5] He then worked as an editor for American Heritage but quit after writing his first book, The Johnstown Flood.^[6] He is most famous for The Path Between the Seas, a book which won the National Book Award in History, the Francis Parkman Prize, and the Cornelius Ryan Award.^[7]
