Devo is a new wave pop music group from Ohio. They formed in 1972 at Kent State University but did not see popular success until 1980, when "Whip It" became a hit single. Devo's name stands for "De-Evolution". The band promotes the idea that humans are de-evolving rather than evolving, although this and the rest of the band's putative beliefs are widely thought to be an elaborate joke. After "Whip It" in 1980, they only had one other song hit the Top 40, "Working in the Coal Mine" in 1981, which was from the soundtrack to the cartoon film Heavy Metal.
