The Doctrine and Covenants is one of the four standard works, or scriptures, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). The other standard works are the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the Pearl of Great Price.

Summary[edit]

Doctrine and Covenants is comprised of 138 sections (similar to chapters) and two Official Declarations. 135 of the sections were written by Joseph Smith, Jr., while the other three sections and both Official Declarations were written by his successors.^[1] The book contains both records of historical events and doctrinal teachings. While many of the doctrinal teachings deal with Jesus Christ and His role as Savior and Redeemer,^[2] other teachings are those that set Mormons apart as a faith. These other teachings include the Word of Wisdom,^[3] vicarious ordinances,^[4] and lessons about priesthood authority.^[5] The Official Declarations contains updates to the Church's position on plural marriage^[6] and priesthood eligibility.^[7]
