Emma Lazarus

Emma Lazarus was a poet and activist who promoted the cause of Zionism after the Pogroms of 1881 in Tsarist Russia. Lazarus is best remembered for her Petrarchan sonnet The New Colossus which is on a plaque at the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island.
