European American (also: White American) is the term used to describe the ethnic background of Americans with European ancestry. Europeans have settled in the United States since the 16th century and since then mass immigration of Whites from Europe and South America, have continued. Today white people in the United States number about 235 million people. This figure includes nearly 20 million White Hispanics.[1]

Ancestry[edit]

White Americans come from a wide variety of backgrounds. The largest ancestries among white Americans are: German 27%, Irish 13%, English 11%, Scottish 9%, White Hispanic 9%, Italian 9%, Scandinavian 5%, Polish 4% and others 12%.
