Genoa, in Italian Genova, is a port city of Italy, located in the north-west of the country, in Liguria on the Ligurian Sea. It probably was the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. It is one of the four historical Italian sea trade cities, along with Venice, Pisa and Amalfi. The Venetian Marco Polo wrote his famous book, Il Milione, while in a genuese prison.

Genoa is also the name of one of the two soccer teams of the city that play in the Italian league. The other team is Sampdoria.

The word jeans comes from the city's name.
