Gloucestershire is a county in northern south-east England that formerly contained the famous port city of Bristol. In 1974 Bristol was given its own county called Avon, and although this was abolished in 1996 Bristol itself was not placed back into any county, and is thus unique in England. Gloucestershire is home to large parts of the River Severn, which runs through Gloucester before reaching the Bristol Channel.

The county is split into three distinct areas:

• The Royal Forest of Dean
• The Cotswolds
• The Severn Vale

Political[edit]

The Local Government of Gloucestershire is the County Council and runs from a small city called Gloucester. Within the County Council there are several other local councils that regulate local affairs:

• Forest of Dean District Council
• Stroud District Council
• Tewkesbury Borough Council
• Cotswold District Council
• Gloucester City Council
• Cheltenham Town Council

Each local council may have parish or town council situated within.

Demographics[edit]

Gloucestershire has a population of around 570 000.^[1]
