Harp

From Conservapedia - Reading time: 1 min

King Saul listens to David play the harp in this Rembrandt painting

The Harp is a triangular string instrument.[1]

It is considered one of the worlds oldest musical instruments. The Harp was one of the instruments played by the Levites on the steps of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. David played the harp for King Saul.

  • One of the more endearing things about harp music is that it can be soothing and unobtrusive. At parties, receptions, or dinners, harp music can provide a pleasant background without interfering with quiet conversation, yet the harp's sound carries well and can still be heard. [2]

The word harp has its origins in the Old Norse, German and Anglo-Saxon meaning "to pluck".

Compare: Zither

Notes[edit]

  1. "The harp is any plucked string instrument, usually triangular in shape, in which the plane of the strings is perpendicular to the soundboard. Zithers, auto harps, guitars and violins all have their strings running parallel to the sound board (or sound hole), which is their major difference from harps." [1]
