On March 31, 1820, Thomas Hopu and Hiram Bingham were the first Christian missionaries to set foot in Hawaii.^[1]

They translated the Bible using a 12-letter alphabet. They also established a school, a church, and a newspaper. They persuaded women to wear dresses.

By this time King Kamehameha II and his Queen mother Ka'ahumanu had already banned human sacrifice and idolatry. Queen Ka'ahumanu, who had helped spread the Gospel in the islands, received a copy of the newly translated version of the New Testament in her native Hawaiian language just prior to her death. Her last words before she died were:

"I am going where the mansions are ready."^[2]
