Homework Four Answers - Student Nine

From Conservapedia - Reading time: 2 min

1. Explain why the North supported higher tariffs, but the South opposed them.

The North supported higher tariffs because it protected them against foreign manufacturers. The South however opposed them because it cost them more to get equipment for farming.

Good ... but see the model answers when ready for additional reasons why the South opposed tariffs. (Minus 1).

2.

3. Who was the most politically conservative president of the early presidents, after George Washington? Explain.

The most conservative president of the early presidents was Either Abraham Lincoln or James Monroe. Lincoln, most notably because he led his country through the Civil War, destroyed slavery, and was also homeschooled. And Monroe mostly because of his Monroe Doctrine, which basically said that Europe could not add new colonies or even interfere with the West. This is still used quite effectively today.

Excellent point about Lincoln having been homeschooled! Superb answer.

4. Many say the war of 1812 was an unnecessary war. Your view, please?

I agree with the many who say that the war of 1812 was an unnecessary war. It basically was The Revolution all over again, just a little less intense.

Right.

5. Choose any mystery or discussion question from the lecture, write about it.

Was the Louisiana Purchase an improper exercise of power?

I don’t think so. Thomas Jefferson had every right to the land. And instead of being owned by Spain and France it is now owned by the U.S. It was also a very respectful price which we purchased it for.
Good.

6. Pick the decision you like most, and the one you like least, by the Marshall Court. Explain.

McCullough v. Maryland is probably my favorite decision made by The Marshall Court. I don’t think that a single state should have the power to tax a federal bank, which is the reason that I like this decision. Marbury v. Madison is my least favorite decision made by the Marshall Court. I do not believe that the judicial review should have nearly enough power to call an Act of Congress unconstitutional.

Excellent, which could become a model answer!

7.

8. Describe something that surprises you about the map of the United States in 1840.

There are actually two things that surprise me about this. One of them is that I did not realize that Texas had at one point been a republic. The other is where Mexico was situated at the time.

Good.

H1 I do not believe that we overpaid for the Louisiana Purchase. We got a very good amount of land from that, and it was well worth the price we paid.

Good, but need to explain further. (Minus 1)

H3 Is It wrong for a politician to cut a deal with another politician like the “corrupt bargain” between Adams and Clay?

In that particular instance, yes, I think it was wrong, and it is the same in almost all cases.

Good, but also not enough explanation for the answer. (Minus 1)

H4 Andrew Jackson was by many considered the first modern president because he wasn’t just part of the show, he was the show.Weather I would have voted for him probably depends on where I came from. If I was a farmer in the south I most likely would have voted for him. But if I was were someone scholarly farther north, I probably wouldn’t have.

Superb analysis that your vote would probably have depended on your occupation and location. (Note: "whether", not "weather" here).
