Homework Four Answers - Student One

From Conservapedia - Reading time: 2 min

1. Explain why the North supported higher tariffs, but the South opposed them.

The South opposed the tariffs because they were practically forced to pay the North money and the north supported it because they were able to make money.

A good start, but more explanation is needed as to why the effect was the South paying money to the North. (Minus 1)

2.

3. Who was the most politically conservative of the early presidents, after George Washington? Explain.

James Monroe was probably the most politically conservative president. Monroe was so much against national power that he even opposed the ratification of the constitution as “Anti-Federalist.” But that was decades earlier, and by 1817 he was ready to be president, in many ways he was one of the best presidents in American History.

Excellent, but give an example from his presidency to justify your statement (Minus 1)

4. Many say the War of 1812 was an unnecessary war. Your view, please?

I believe the war of 1812 was necessary because the States were not still completely free from the British. Besides, the war would have probably happened at some point anyway. It was also how the United States broke completely free from the British.

OK.

5. Choose any mystery or discussion question from the lecture, and write about it.

Debate: Was this "Louisiana Purchase" an improper exercise of power?

I do think it was an improper exercise of power because he had no right to just go and buy that much land without any counseling

Good, but what is "counseling" in this context? Good choice of a question from the lecture.

6. Pick the decision you like most, and the one you like least, by the Marshall Court. Explain.

I agree with the Cohen v. Virginia trial because it gave people free will to buy something that might get them some money. I also agree with it because it gave people free will to do what they wanted with their money.

I do not agree with the Cherokee Nation v. Georgia because I believe that the court had no right to just kick the indians out of their land.

OK, but the Cohens v. Virginia case (note "s" at the end of Cohen") had more to do with federal power than free will of people to do what they wanted with their money. Also, note my change to use lowercase "v" in the "v." case names in your answer. Good answer otherwise. (Minus 1)

8. Describe something that surprises you about the map of the United States in 1840.

What surprised me the most by far was that there was still land claimed by Britain even after the war of 1812 when we got the rest of the British out of the country

Excellent.

Honors Questions

H1. I do believe that we overpaid in the Louisiana Purchase. I do not think it was unconstitutional because we made the money back in the long run.

Interesting, but how does making the money back in the long run render the purchase constitutional? (Minus 1).

H2. I liked the Democratic Republic party the most because i agreed with their views the most.

OK ... but note that it's name was "Democratic Republican", not Republic.

H4. Andrew Jackson was deemed the first modern President because he didn't just watch things happen, but he made things happen.

I would vote for him because he had very good views and he was a strong man. I admit he was a little whiny at times but nevertheless, I still would have voted for him.

OK.
