Homework Four Answers - Student Twelve

From Conservapedia - Reading time: 2 min

1. Explain why the North supported higher tariffs, but the South opposed them.

The North supported higher tariffs because they could easily sell their products for less than their foreign competition. The South disagreed with this because the residential cotton farmers had to pay extra money for their equipment to be shipped overseas, and the foreigners also imposed tariffs on outgoing cotton shipments which resulted in even less revenue.

Close, but not quite. The southern farmers paid more for their goods due to the tariffs. The tariffs did not cause any farmers to ship equipment overseas. (Minus 1)

2. Who was the most politically conservative of the early presidents, after George Washington? Explain.

According to the lecture, James Monroe was the most conservative president of the 1900s. He was elected in 1816 and served two terms. He made a great deal of acomplishments during his time in office, such as the Adams-Onis Treaty and the Monroe Doctrine. America was influenced by Monroe's conservative leadership, and the economy "blossomed".

Excellent. (Note spelling: "accomplishments" is the correct spelling)

3. Many say the War of 1812 was an unnecessary war. Your view, please?

I think it was necessary because it cleaned up the disputes left over from the Revolutionary War. Also, the Star-Spangled Banner was written during this huge mess. If the war never happened, America wouldn't have an Anthem.

Good point!

4. Choose any mystery or discussion question from the lecture, and write about it. [Was this "Louisiana Purchase" an improper exercise of power?]

Nobody was taking advantage of anyone during this time. Napoleon decided that France should not colonize with America any longer, so France asked James Monroe how much he would pay for all of France's claimed territory in America. Monroe was going to buy the land from France anyway, so they both benefited from this purchase.

OK, but how about discussing whether the purchase was constitutional? (Minus 1). (Note: "colonize America," not "colonize with America.")

5. Pick the decision you like most, and the one you like least, by the Marshall Court. Explain.

The decision I like the most is Fletcher v. Peck, which established the new power of declaring a state law as "unconstitutional", thus invalidating it.

The decision I dislike the most is Cherokee Nation v. Georgia, because they didn't see the Cherokees as their own Nation, thus disallowing them to sue in federal court. If I lived in America at this time, I would have supported the fact that the Native Americans were settled here before us and should have the right to citizenship.

Excellent analysis.

6. Describe something that surprises you about the map of the United States in 1840.

What surprises me about the map of the United States in 1840 is how much land was claimed by other countries, but today, America owns all of it.

Right.
