Homework Nine Answers - Student Six

From Conservapedia - Reading time: 2 min

2. Imperialism by a charitable Christian people, a good thing or a bad thing?

I think it depends on the motives behind the Imperialism. If it is for business reasons, I don’t think it is a bad thing, as long as it is done wisely and doesn’t stir tension with other countries. But if it is for gaining power, then it is usually and bad thing because it often creates wars and makes people prideful.

Excellent.

3. Your thoughts on the progressive movement, please.

Progressives are kind of like a downplayed version of Communists. They both strive to make things better and don’t care to see whether it is possible or not. Two words that come to my mind are optimistic, and unrealistic.

Terrific - could become a model answer.

4.

5. The “Cross of Gold” speech: lots of meaning, or meaningless? Explain, including who gave the speech and under what circumstances.

William Jennings Bryan gave this speech just after the Panic of 1893(he delivered it in 1896.) Regardless of whether or not it had meaning, it was very influential, and gave newspapers and Critics more than a little to consider. That being said, I do think it was meaningful. It made a wonderful and accurate allegory to the bible relating it to the current issues over currency, and also got him elected as the Democratic Nominee for President.

OK. Good analysis.

6. What would be an example today of “yellow journalism”?

Probably the way the press majorly overplayed the nuclear problems in japan, while hardly even mentioning the thousands of lived and homes destroyed.

Right, though there seems to be a mistake in grammar towards the end of your answer.

7. Who was the “Conservative Democrat”? Discuss.

Grover Cleveland was the “Conservative Democrat.” Since the Democrats had not won a presidential election in a long time, they turned to a conservative. I think the key reason Cleveland won was because he got the votes of a lot of Republicans as well as from his own political party.

Right.

8. Select two of the social movements of the late 1800s and discuss.

Self-improvement was definitely a big one. We can still see a lot of it today, especially when adults go back to finish their education. Imperialism was another major thing in the socialist movement, and resulted in the Spanish-American War.

Excellent, could become a model answer.

H1 No. I don’t think America should have been involved in the war in the first place, and I much less agree with the way we ended it. There is tension between the U.S. and the Philippians still today because of our bad judgment then and this is mostly the reason for it.

Right ... or is the tension due to continued opposition to Christianity, which America expanded on the island?

H2: I will be choosing to talk about Imperialism, and whether or not it is wrong. I think that the idea of Imperialism is fine. But a lot of times, where it brings us, (the Spanish-American War) is not a good place. So for the most part it should probably be avoided, unless there is good reason for the contrary.

OK.

H5 John D. Rockefeller was a great person, and started many of the things we see today in business. Sure, he had his faults, don’t all of us? But all in all, he was an amazing and extremely influential person.

Good, could include some specific examples to bolster your argument. (Minus 1).
89/90. Very well done!--Andy Schlafly 14:21, 17 April 2011 (EDT)
